Things to do in New Zealand – North Island – Top 5
Yes, we had a wonderful time on the North Island of New Zealand. In this blog we take you with us and show you our Top 5 highlights and things to do in New Zealand – North Island.
Highlight 1: Tongariro Crossing
This was probably our number 1 experience in New Zealand. The Tongariro Crossing is a one day hiking trip, that will take you around 7 hours (or maybe longer). It’s hard, but it’s wonderful. Sometimes it feels like you’re hiking through an alien landscape. Be prepared to have some muscle pain the days after. 🙂

Highlight 3: Waitomo Caves – Glowworms
You can take a look at glowworms in caves at several spots in New Zealand. But if you want to have a fairytale experience we can recommend Spellbound Glowworm tours. Sitting in a boat, you’ll float under a starry sky of glowworms.
Highlight 4: Wellington
If you also like to visit a city on the North Island of New Zealand, we can recommend Wellington. It has a wonderful peaceful and relaxed vibe.
Highlight 5: Several beautiful beaches
New Zealand has a lot of beautiful beaches. Four cool beaches we “discovered” are:
Highlight 5A: Black Sand Beach in Auckland
Highlight 5B: Oke Bay in the Bay of Islands
Highlight 5C: The beach of Cathedral Cove
Highlight 5D: Hot Water Beach
When it’s tide, and you dig a hole on a specific area on the beach, hot water comes up, and you’re laying in your own spa, while looking at the cold sea. However, you’re not the only one who wants to do that. When it’s tide it’s very crowded on the beach. So you have a hard time finding a spot to dig your hole.
But next to the hot water beach, there’s also a regular beautiful and quiet beach. And if you’re camping, Hot Water Beach Top 10 Holiday Park is on walking distance. This was one of our favourite camping-spots. It’s green and there’s a lot of space. And you can buy fish & chips or a delicious Vegetarian Burger there. 🙂
Our next blog will show you the highlights of New Zealand – South Island.
